About this Exploration:

Chief Opothleyahola (Hu-pui-hilth-Yahola) was the Principal Chief of the Muscogee people and the Speaker of the Upper Creek Council during the American Civil War. He was successful in protesting the Treaty of Indian Springs in 1825 and was a key character in the negotiations of Treaty of Cusseta in 1832. But what Chief Opothleyahola is most remembered for is leading a faction of Creek and Black Indians loyal to the Union to seek refuge in Kansas, known as the Trail of Blood on Ice.

He died in March of 1863 and is buried in Woodson County. His picture is featured on a mural painted north of Yates Center dedicated to the history of Woodson County.
