About this Exploration: If you happen upon the Daylight Donut Shop from 6-6:30 a.m., you’ll find a years-old group of eight men entrenched in their weekday routine of coffee, conversation (and donuts only on Friday).
In fact, the group is so regular that the donut shop workers decided to commemorate their daily presence with a “perfect attendance award” to the group’s unofficial “president.” When the others saw this, a competition brewed, so now the workers made it right and fair by taking attendance each day. Since beginning, six of the eight have received perfect attendance awards!
This type of customer-to-worker interaction isn’t unusual at the donut shop. The owners display pictures of their customers on the wall, and they traded a small building four years ago for a larger one with more table and group space. Now, each hour hosts a new group who gather over donuts and coffee like clockwork.
You can imagine that the time the regular groups spend in
the donut shop represent more than glazed pastries. It represents camaraderie
and togetherness and common struggles. It represents the kind of rural life where people enjoy each
other and knowing one another. It represents Ulysses!
