About this Exploration:

Listed on the State Register of Historic Places and an official Santa Fe Trail Visitor’s Center, this museum is more than its blazing, colorful exhibits and stunning artistry on the inside.

The outside holds a story, too. The adobe building was constructed as a WPA project from 1937-1938 and was originally a machine shop built by general contractor Lee King. It was built with adobe blocks laid with mud mortar. Later, the exterior was covered with cement stucco and white washed. In 1970, the building was converted into a museum and the walls were painted a clay color.

The Hotel Edwards was built in 1887 as a part of Old Ulysses. To make the trek to New Ulysses, it was cut in three sections! Even though the hotel was reconstructed in its entirety, Old Ulysses is still evident inside as furnishings are arranged as though Old West guests still make their beds there for the night.

Museum architecture is complete with an old school house from Old Ulysses.

The 1930s exhibits in the Historic Adobe Museum are a finalist for the 8 Wonders of Kansas History.

Open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday 1–5 p.m.  Admission is free. Closed on major holidays.
