 In 1898 a government geodetic survey determined that the geographical center of the 48 continental states was located at 39 degrees latitude and 98 degrees longitude. This spot was located one mile north of Lebanon, Kansas on US Hwy 281 and one mile west on Hwy 191. Over the years Lebanon Kansas has been referred to as "the Center of the Country", The Hub of the Nation", "The Crossroads of North America", "Dead Center, USA". This stone monument was built at the designated exact geographic center of the nation. It was officially dedicated on June 29, 1941 Quiet moments of worship can be spent in the miniature chapel on the grounds. Occasionally those born and raised in the area return to this site for their wedding.
