About this Exploration: ![]() ![]() ![]() Osage City has three cemeteries and two war memorials.
Drive north from town on Hwy 31, where the cemeteries are grouped near intersection of Hwy 56 & Hwy 31
On the west side of the road are Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery and the Union Cemetery (commonly known as the Swedish Cemetery). On the east side of the highway is the American Cemetery. Union & American cemeteries are maintained by full-time sexton, Osage City.
To visit one of the veteran memorials, enter the entrance to the American Cemetery marked by a 1930 brick entrance dedicated in honor of Dr. Packer. Travel down the northern-most lane until you see The Stone. The stone was erected in grateful memory to the soldiers, sailors, and marines of the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War by the Canby Woman's Relief Corp #33, Department of Kansas and the Citizens of Osage City. "Sleep, with the sunshine of fame on thy slumber." It was dedicated in 1925.
A newer Veterans' Memorial Wall is on the corner where Gert's Dairy operated for years. This wall and bricks was constructed and built this decade. Individual bricks were laid and are dedicated to individuals who served our country in varying ways. Does someone from your life have a brick there? Interesting to find and read the inscriptions. Initiated by the by the local American Legion, Heizer, Post. Funded by private donations.
Pause and touch the granite stones, read the bricks and pay thanks once again to those who paid the ultimate price.
