In the late 19th century, it was said to resemble the ruins of many castles and was referred to as "Castle City". Some say it got its name "Little Jerusalem" because from a distance it looks like the ancient walled city of Jerusalem. Locals and geologists know it by this name.
In partnership with Kansas Dept. of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism, the site has been designated as Little Jerusalem Badlands State park and will open summer of 2019. Until public access has been developed, the several hundred acres of chalk badlands can be viewed from County Road 380.
