Email Address: ncmuseum@gbta.net About this Exploration: Joe went on to be a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox from 1908-1916 and then was traded due to injury to the Cleveland Indians where he played outfield from 1917-1922. While with the Red Sox, Smoky Joe struck out 15 St. Louis Brown batters on July 7, 1911. He pitched a no-hit, no-run game against St. Louis Browns on July 29, 1911. He won three games against New York Giants in 1912 World Series. The only players known to compete in the World Series as pitchers and later as outfielders were Joe Wood and Babe Ruth. Smoky Joe was considered by many to be one of the most versatile and natural athletes that ever lived.
