About this Exploration:

Directions:  From U.S. 36 the "short block" goes to the south.  It extends from 2nd Street to 16th Street.

Between Center Street (U.S. 36)  and Broadway, Marysville has a unique "short block" that is half as wide as a normal city block.  When Marysville began in the 1850's it was laid out in the area south of Center Street, while another town, Palmetto, was granted the land immediately north.  The two groups of town settlers laid out the main streets of their towns only half a block apart.

In a short time most of the Palmetto settlers left and Palmetto merged into Marysville, but the two streets remained.  Many decades later U.S. 36 was routed along Center Street, with the result that highway travelers often see only the back doors of businesses located on Broadway, Historic Downtown Marysville.
