The Lura Post Office was built by donations from local residents so mail would be dropped off instead of someone having to travel to Osborne, KS or Russell, KS to get the mail.  The land was donated, David Schurr, a Civil War vet and farmer.  This post office was also a trading post and trade was conducted with local Indians as well as area residents.  The hardy souls along Wolf Creek did not wait for Washington, DC to decide to place a post office but built one themselves.  It was a dugout with limestone walls and the walls are still standing today.
