About this Exploration: Kansas Correctional Industries is a self-supporting program of the Kansas Department of Corrections which is composed of state and private prison industries. As of 2009, the Lansing Correctional Facility has five industry divisions; Chemical Products, Data Entry, Metal Products, LCF Agri-Business, and KCI's Main Warehouse and Distribution Hub. KCI also supplies inmate workers for more than eight private industries. State inmates have to use their wages to pay restitution, child support, 25% of their room and board and have a mandatory savings account. Many send money to their families and give to charitable organizations. In order for a private company to use inmate labor, the company has to show that they cannot fill the jobs with members of the public. A product of LCF's Chemical Products Division which is also seen by the public on a daily basis is the paint used by the Kansas Department of Transportation to paint the traffic lines on highways. Due to state statues only goverments, churches, schools, and eligible not-for-profits may purchase items from KCI.
