About this Exploration:

William Ansel "Billy" Mitchell came to La Cygne as a young boy after the death of his father. As the oldest son still at home, Billy took his responsibility seriously and took a job as an apprentice for the La Cygne Journal. He was intrigued by the stories of the early pioneers in the area, so he spent many hours interviewing them and researching the history of the area.

After attending college in Washington, D.C., Billy returned to Kansas in 1890 and began writing articles for the La Cygne Journal based on the interviews and research he had done with the local residents. This became a weekly column, and, at the request of his readers, he later published several of his favorite stories in the book, Linn County Kansas: A History. A copy of this book is available at the La Cygne Public Library.

They also have copies of all the old La Cygne Journal newspapers on microfilm.
