Originally, the school mascot was the yellow jackets. Local volunteers formed a committee to build The Hive as a safe place for school kids to go after school and athletic events. It has since become a family center where you can eat, play pool, and play video games with the young and old.
The grill is open Monday through Friday evenings. On Tuesdays at noon, it serves a great home cooked meal for employees of local businesses, senior citizens, crews that are working in town for the day or week, kids, and other community members. The Hive is unique in that it is run mostly by volunteers, who serve 50-100 diners each Tuesday at noon. The menu is varied from week to week, month to month with the chicken fried steak sandwich and taco salad being some of the favorites. Besides the regular gals that serve, other ladies in the community bake homemade desserts to complete the meal. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, a group of ladies meet for coffee.
The Hive has also been used as an incubator for ideas to support Gridley and its citizens. Open Monday-Friday 4 p.m. - 9 p.m.; Tuesdays and Fridays 11 a.m.; and Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. for coffee. |
