The South Mound is one of two geological anomalies, rising approximately 1005 feet above sea level in the fertile Fall River valley.  The sandstone mounds were formed some 175 million years ago when Kansas was a great ocean.  The mounds became landmarks to early day settlers, and "Twin Mounds" was actually one name proposed for Fredonia.  There is a 100 foot flag pole atop the South Mound, which sports a Grand 40 x 60 foot American flag.  The Fredonia Lions Club maintains the park/playground and observation platform for the enjoyment of those visiting the top of the mound.
