About this Exploration: Roadside markers tell the story of Henry and Rosa Ise, young German Americans who homesteaded in 1873 and of the community who helped to support each other as they met the challenges together. Author John Ise tells of his parents' lives, especially his mother's life, as she must have told it to him in his childhood. Sod and Stubble is now used in history departments of institutions of higher learning as an accurate, graphic, and unadorned page in the American record. Brochures with the driving directions are available at the Downs city office located at 715 Railroad Street. Open Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The book, Sod and Stubble, is available in Downs at Lazy Daisy Kansas Store, 809 Morgan Avenue (785.454.6626).
