Cardinal is the home of one of the oldest original soda fountains in Kansas, and probably is in the top three of the 37 left in operation. A rare collection of Coke memorabilia and medicine bottles adds to the historic atmosphere. Jim Chappell, former owner of Cardinal, was determined to bring a soda fountain back to that area of Main Street and went on a years-long quest to find one for his store. He finally came upon the one now in the store and had it moved from Pittsburg, Kansas. The custom of ordering a soda fountain treat was recently named one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Customs so all the 37 operating soda fountains share that 8 Wonders. Cardinal Drug is much like an old five-and-dime store with all types of goods. It also sells handmade fudge that probably has more butter than the law allows!
Cardinal Drug Store is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m-2 p.m.
