About this Exploration:

Robert D. Olsen, Sr. grew up in  Burlingame. Upon graduating high school here, he joined the Army where he advanced to Special Agent in Charge of the Latent Fingerprint Division with the US Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory (USACIL) in Fort Gordon, GA. He was instrumental in creating professional standards and training curriculum for the USACIL regarding fingerprint identification.  These standards and curriculum were so influential they were adopted by many civilian agencies.

He stressed practical applications and techniques, research, training, testing and professional standards. Robert Olsen was best known for revising Walter Scott's 1951 book Fingerprint Mechanics.  It was published in 1978 titled Scott's Fingerprint Mechanics. Referred to as the “granddaddy” of textbooks on fingerprints, Olsen’s book is considered one of the most comprehensive fingerprint books worldwide and still routinely referenced in books and articles written on the subject today.

Robert Olsen retired from the Army Crime Lab in 1978, returned to Burlingame, and continued his career with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation until his death on February 23, 1989.  Photographs, articles written by Robert D. Olsen, and other information on fingerprinting can be viewed at the Burlingame Community Library.
