About this Exploration:

The Schuyler Grade School, name for early settler Philip Schuyler, was built in 1902 serving generations of Burlingame elementary children in its 99-year existence.

In August of 2001, the Schuyler School students moved into a new facility adjoining the high school on the north side of Burlingame and the old s chool was closed. The Burlingame Historic Preservation Society (BHPS) was formed that spring in order to transform it into an historic museum. The Schuyler Musuem opened in 2002, coinciding with the 100^th anniversary of the school. The museum features exhibits reflecting Burlingame’s rich history including artifacts from the coal mining days, the Santa Fe Trail, and the Santa Fe Railroad. There is also a genealogy room, where researchers can trace their heritage and study the history of this area. Special exhibits include:   

 

• Arrowhead collection of Robert "Swede" and Shirley Masters
• School memorabilia gallery and simulated one-room school 
• Stage curtain purchased in 1925 by rural Superior School families
• 1938 Ford Open Cab Pumper Truck and other local fire department memorabilia
• Extensive military collection dating back to the Civil War.  

On April 15 the Schuyler Grade School was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, the nation's official list of historically significant properties.

 

Open Wednesday 1-4 p.m.; Friday 1-4 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m.–4 p.m. and Sunday 1-4 p.m.  Also open by appointment and special request.
